Good news is fun news. And the “exceptionally high” growth in renewable energy in 2020 is good news for the economy and the climate.

Better yet, the International Energy Agency (IEA) recently reported that high growth in the renewable energy sector is the “new normal.” The IEA expects growth to continue at the same pace or accelerate over the next few years.

  • 90% of global power sector growth in 2020 came from new renewable energy capacity — primarily solar and wind
  • Renewable electricity capacity grew 45% year-over-year, adding 280 gigawatts in 2020
  • The IEA expects another 270 to 280 gigawatts to come online in 2021 and again in 2022

IEA executive director Fatih Birol said, “Wind and solar power are giving us more reasons to be optimistic about our climate goals as they break record after record.”
