Big data, digitalization, and process standardization will have major impacts on supply chains.

Supply chain professionals see big data and digitalization as more impactful now than in 2021. Process standardization rounds out the top three trends.

The reason for the emphasis on data? Supply chain operations involve more and more data. The amount of data now exceeds the capabilities of human processes.

Also, the pandemic response prompted more companies to take action on digitalization for the first time.

The Triangle of Big Data, Digitalization, & Process Standardization

  • Faster data analysis—real time when possible—empowers responsive supply chain pivots. For many companies, the availability of data insights may make the difference between failure and success.
  • Likewise, digitalization provides data for intelligent analysis. Digitalization also relies on data for optimal functioning and integrated communications. Combined, these trends will enable companies to adjust supply chains on the go.
  • Both big data and digitalization rely on and inform process standardization. Without a foundation in standardized processes, neither big data nor digitalization work well.

Therefore, we anticipate more companies will build a triangle of capabilities in big data, digitalization, and process standardization in the next few years. Where does your company fit on the data and digitalization continuum?
