SEO Best Practices for Manufacturing. The graph shows the most effective search engine optimization (SEO) tactics worldwide as of November 2017. During the survey, the follower percentage of respondents chose each item as "most effective": 57% chose on-page content; 50% chose keyword research; 46% chose link building; 43% chose website structure; 34% chose meta data and tags; and 32 percent of responding marketers stated that social media sharing was the most effective SEO tactic. For the past two weeks, our Website Wednesdays series has emphasized manufacturing website priorities and the significance of SEO for industrial manufacturers. Today we will look at SEO best practices for manufacturing.

About Keywords

To come up with keywords, put yourself in the shoes of your target customer. We’ve found that brainstorming answers to these questions will help you get started:

  • What will a prospective buyer enter into the Google search bar?
  • How will they phrase their search?
  • What matters most to them when they’re searching for suppliers in our industry?

From there, consider which keywords best fit your unique value. For example, sometimes it makes sense to invest in longer keyword phrases.

Longer keyword phrases often cost less and may not be as widely pursued by competitors. Carefully craft keywords to match your buyers’ searches for the best results.

Metadata and SEO

Search engines like Google “read” the metadata on webpages. Metadata includes meta titles, also called “title tags,” and metadata descriptions or webpage summaries.

Search engines use the metadata to evaluate how closely a webpage matches users’ search terms.  Also, meta descriptions appear in search results. Good descriptions will encourage users to click through to your site.

  • Caution: Gaming the system will not help you here.
  • You want to attract users who match your prospect profile.
  • Craft metadata that closely matches the content on your page for a win-win SEO strategy.

 

Redirect 404 Error Links

I won’t go into technical details here. Suffice it to say that you will lose SEO points for having 404 error pages. Get your web team to create 301 redirects for all 404 errors to yield the best SEO results.
